Through conversation and guided writing prompts, Sonya will encourage participants to draw from their own experiences, traditions and memories to discover the stories they carry with them.
You don't need to celebrate Diwali — or consider yourself a writer — to participate. Come ready to reflect, create and tell a story that's uniquely yours.

Every writer has a unique voice — but discovering it and trusting it can be one of the hardest parts of writing.
In this interactive workshop, Sonya will explore what it means to develop an authentic writing voice, overcome self-doubt and create work that feels true to you.
Drawing on her experience writing journalism, novels and screenplays, Sonya will guide participants through practical exercises focused on voice, character and dialogue to help writers build confidence and tell the stories only they can tell.

Sonya Singh is an award-winning journalist, screenwriter and bestselling author whose work explores love, culture, family, identity and belonging with humour and heart.
Her debut novel, Sari, Not Sari, became an instant Canadian bestseller. Her second novel, The Fake Matchmaker, was published in 2026 by Doubleday Canada.
In 2026, Sonya received a National Magazine Award for DEI reporting. In addition to writing fiction and journalism, she develops television and film projects and regularly speaks at libraries, festivals and literary events across Canada.
